Silver Soldering Techniques

Article and Video by Bruce Cheaney

When I started out trying to figure out how to silver solder my handmade Bits and Spurs I found that it was easier for me to hard solder with Harris 45% solder than it was with the Stay-Brite soft solder it seems like it takes a lot more patience with the lower heat solders but it can be mastered with a little bit of practice.

For most of my handmade bits and spurs, buckles and conchos I use Harris 45% brazing alloy and when I have multiple solderings and mountings that is when I use Harris Stay-Brite soft solder this allows me to stack the silver and create a more dimensional look than just a single mount.

Some of the tools and supplies are listed below.

Silver and Brazing Solder by Harris Products Group.

Stay Brite Silver Solder.

Radio Shack soft solder 60/40 rosin core.

Weller Soldering Gun.

Victor Acetylene Torch with size 0 heating tip.

This video clip gives you some different examples of soft soldering.
